I think Tommy Price played someone else's drumkit I'm not sure, but it didin't look like his kit. It was a tiny pale yellow kit that had sat in the corner of the stage and they just dragged it out while setting up the Blackhearts equipment. It was dusk when the Blackhearts took stage. They came out and 1-2-3-4ed into "Victim of Circumstances" they rapid fired about 5 or 6 songs then Joan said "Hi La Habra!" and everyone screamed "Joan!", "Joan!", "I love you Joan" Flashbulbs were going off like crazy. She had really worked up the crowd they were sceaming for all the hits.
The was a second of silence and Joan sang "IIII!"and the place went crazy "Crimson and Clover". I was looking thru the crowd trying to see what Joan's audience consisted of, every kind you could think of. The people in front were sitting in a V.I.P. roped off area. It was annoying to the real Jettheads seeing these rich boring people tapping thier foot and thinking we were rowdy and scarey and they needed secruity to feel safe. A th one point they picked the winning raffle # an old looking dried up blonde all dressed in designer duds and Prada shades stood up. She won the $1,000 dollars and the crowd boo-ed her tillshe sat down. So not a Jetthead!!
Joan did "Baby Blue" from the fetish album but that was the only song from that album that had no bad language, it was still a serious song about an abused young girl.
Finally the crowd got the pay off. "I love rock and roll" the younger kids were jumping up and down this being a song that has been used in some recent movies and it was new to them.
Joan totally charmed this audience. After the show, Jett waited about 30 minutes then emerged from backstage to sign autographs and take pixs with her fans. She stayed till everyone shook her hand, had thier T-Shirts signed or copped a photo or autograph. She Truely is faithfull to her fans and care what they think of her. Ithink she is a legend. Yes, I believe she is a legend. |

JOAN JETT LIVE AT SUMMERFEST
When I heard Joan Jett was playing Summerfest I was excited then filled w/questions. How is Joan Jett going to pull this off. The idea of her playing at a catholic school carnival was puzzling, since the last time I had seen her, In Palmdale at an arts and crafts festival Joan was playing hard, and playing some of her more adults songs "Relax, while I pound your ass!" She screamed then lead the Blackhearts into the Iggy classic "I wanna be your dog" She started a slow seduction at the chorus when she asked the audience to "Howl along" Then Joan knelt down and whispered in the microphone "Come fuck me lil doggies!" and the audience "Howled" w/approval She pleaded, We Howled!, So I had a concern, Could I take my 12 year old niece to Joan Jett without her hearing the "F" word..
I had faith in Joan's respect for her fans. So Summerfest day arrived and a bunch of us headed for the carnival. The stage was a good setup for folding chairs and level ground. There was a huge banner over rthe mixing board that said "Welcome Joan".
We saw Joan in the backstage area kind of doing a meet and great w/the v.i.p.s She has the greatest smile when she looks at you.
In the meantime we were held captive and forced to watch the "Bonedaddy's" I'm not saying they were bad. They kept a "festive mood" while people drank beer in the hot sun. They were capable musicians but these guys were like in thier 50's and made you feel like you were trapped at some dead head beach party.
Dressed in Hawaiian Lei's and wayfarers , You could just smell the teryaki in the air as their songs went on and on and of course Everybody's solo.
Finally they were finished and it took a while to break down their equipment since they had about 10 people on stage. |
